Edward vom Hofe, Heddon, Zwarg Reels

In the late 1890's and early 1900's, one of the finest large saltwater and Salmon reel makers known was Edward vom Hofe of NY.  These handmade reels are mostly for saltwater use and shown below is a full range of the sizes and styles he made from the 1-0 to 12-0.  The reels are made of German silver and a hard rubber side plate.  The Salmon reels are marked "Griswold".

Otto Zwarg worked for vom Hofe and later started his own company, making an equally fine handmade saltwater and Salmon reel.   Both types are shown.

After the turn of the century, reel making became standardized and Heddon made some of the better production reels.  Included in this group are fhe famous "windshield wiper" type 4-15 and 4-18.  All these are Bass size casting reels are made of German silver and brass.
